* **By capability:** 


AI can be classified into different categories based on its capabilities. The most common categories are:



    * **Narrow AI (ANI):** 

This is the type of AI that we see most often in today's world. ANI systems are good at performing specific tasks, but they are not able to generalize their knowledge to new situations. For example, a chess-playing AI can beat a human opponent, but it would not be able to play a different game like checkers.



    * **General AI (AGI):**

 This is a hypothetical type of AI that would be able to understand and reason about the world in the same way that a human does. AGI systems would be able to learn and adapt to new situations, and they would be able to perform a wide range of tasks. AGI does not yet exist, but it is a major goal of AI research.




 **Superintelligence:** 

This is a hypothetical type of AI that would be far more intelligent than any human. Superintelligent AI would be able to solve problems that are beyond the reach of human intelligence, and it could potentially pose an existential threat to humanity. Superintelligence is a popular topic in science fiction, but it is not clear whether it is actually possible to create such an AI.


* **By level of development:** 

AI can also be classified into different stages based on its level of development. The most common stages are:


    * **Early AI:** 




This is the period from the 1950s to the 1970s, when AI research was focused on developing symbolic reasoning systems. These systems were successful in solving some problems, but they were ultimately limited by their inability to learn and adapt.


    * **Machine learning AI:** 



This is the period from the 1980s to the present day, when AI research has focused on developing machine learning algorithms. These algorithms are able to learn from data, and they have been highly successful in developing effective techniques for solving a wide range of problems.


    * **Deep learning AI:** 


This is a recent subfield of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to learn from data. Deep learning algorithms have been highly successful in tasks such as image recognition and natural language processing.


* **By impact:** 

AI can also be classified into different stages based on its impact on society. The most common stages are:


    * **Assisting AI:** 

This is the stage where AI is used to automate tasks and augment human capabilities. For example, AI systems are used to power chatbots, virtual assistants, and self-driving cars.


    * **Partnering AI:** 

This is the stage where AI is used to collaborate with humans on tasks. For example, AI systems are used to help doctors diagnose diseases and to help engineers design products.


    * **Leading AI:** 

This is the hypothetical stage where AI systems are able to make decisions and take actions independently of humans. Leading AI does not yet exist, but it is a potential future for AI development.


It is important to note that these are just a few of the ways that the stage of AI can be described. There is no single right answer, and the best way to describe the stage of AI depends on the specific context.
